Vintage inspiration at New York Fashion Week spring 2020

The last model has walked off the runways of New York Fashion Week, and we are left with so many trends to get excited about for next year. One of my favorite trends every season comes from vintage inspiration. It is always amazing to see which decades inspired designers for the season.

For the spring/summer 2020 season, designers were in love with the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. We saw a lot of Hollywood glamour, sparkle and shine from the Studio 54 era, feminine touches from the 50’s, sleek and chic 40’s looks, as well as playful and fun 60’s styles. Here are a few highlights from some of the New York Fashion Week runways I attended reflecting the spring 2020 decades of inspiration:

Which one of spring 2020’s decades of inspiration inspire you? I am definitely feeling the 40’s and 70’s, although, I am forever feeling the 70’s, so that’s no surprise. Haha

Trends for spring 2019 from New York Fashion Week

What would I do without my crew? If you have been following along, you know I had to suddenly cancel my trip to New York Fashion Week due to a medical emergency. I was planning on traveling to New York with three of my fabulous blogger buddies; Dawn from Fashion Should Be Fun, Laura from Have-Need-Want, and Kali from In Spades Blog. Unfortunately my plans fell through due to my health.

After my emergency room visit I kept my friends in the loop until I knew for certain if I would miss fashion week. It was clear after a couple of days there was no way I could travel to New York, so my friends flew into action and covered different shows for me so that I could still get photos and also know what was actually on the runway; and how the fabrics looked in person. This is why I go to fashion week, there is only so much you can decipher from a photograph. Seeing the fabrics in person, and watching them flow down the runway, helps craft the vibe of a collection and an entire season.

With a little help from my friends this season, I was able to forecast a few fabulous trends for the spring 2019 season, and be able to share them with you! I apologize for not having my usual full coverage, and the street style posts I promised, but I will be back in New York next February and will ensure full coverage of the shows and the streets!

Spring 2019 is proving to be a re-birth of sorts. We are seeing designers favor happier silhouettes and brighter hues. There is an earthy vibe combined with a free-spirited 1980s party vibe. The power suit is back with a vengeance, and our minds are instantly taken back to images of the 1980s when women wore a power suit with power pumps, and big hair. While the power suit was dominant on Wall Street in the 1980s, in 2019, look for it morphing into more of a dinner look, evening look, and anytime you want to flex your power look.

Bright colors dominated the runways, in sharp contrast to the softer hues we have been seeing in past seasons. Blush or “Millenial Pink” has been replaced with a more vivid shade of pink, while neutrals have softened and lightened up. You can read my full post on the spring 2019 color trends here. Of course, my favorite color of the season is blue.

Sparkle and shine like it’s Studio 54 time! The late 1970s and early 1980s party vibe appeared once again on the runways for spring 2019. Designers loved any type of fabric with a sheen to it. They used everything from clear plastic to sequins to metallic threads to create pieces which catch the light, and shine bright. You can sparkle and shine at any time during the day, so wear your sequins to brunch and shimmering skirt to lunch; it’s time to shine!

Ball and chain got you down? It could be because you saw an awful lot of prison stripes on the runways for spring 2019! Perhaps appearing to be locked up is the new trend. This spring 2019, look for bold, black and white stripes alone, or mixed with other stripes and/or prints. Be bold, and wear your stripes proudly; just don’t let the cops see you or they’ll take you back 😉

Trench coats are a classic piece many of us have stuffed in the back of our closet. They started to emerge as more than a classic piece last year, and for spring 2019, the classic trench has taken on new life. When the weather warms up early next year, look to invest in one statement making trench. You can rock this trend with a lightweight, avant-garde trench coat to top off your spring looks, or wear one as a dress! Either way, the trench could be your most important investment next spring.

Well, that is only five trends from the runways which stood out to me during New York Fashion Week this season. As store buyers decide what will sell, and what won’t sell, we will get a better snapshot of what’s to come in spring 2019! What do you think of these five trends? Which ones will you wear and which ones will you skip?

The last model has walked off the catwalk in New York for fall 2018, and the fashion world is left with a whole new set of trends to covet for the next cold weather season. While some trends from spring 2018 proved to have staying power into fall 2018, many others fell by the wayside. To replace them, new trends have emerged for fall 2018, and they are nothing short of fabulous.

There are so many hot trends for the fall 2018 season from New York Fashion Week, I could write a book! So, to streamline things, here are the top five trends for fall 2018 from the New York Fashion Week runways.

New York Fashion Week handbag trends fall 2018: small circle and box bags

Small bags dominated the runways for fall/winter 2018/2019. The most spotted type of runway handbags for the new cold weather season were small circle bags, and small box bags. These two styles also proved to be hot on the streets for spring 2018 at New York Fashion Week, so these are the two handbag styles to invest in now; just don’t wear them cross body! Over the shoulder, or hand-held please!

New York Fashion Week color trends fall 2018: yellow and blue make green

Ultra Violet may be the color of the year, and it did make an appearance on the runways, but the real color stars on the fall 2018 runways at New York Fashion Week were yellow, blue, and green. Look for bold shades of royal and midnight blue, mustard, soft sunshine, military green, and light forest green. Red is sitting happily in 4th place.

New York Fashion Week fashion trends fall 2018: pump up the volume

Gone are the days of basic long sleeves. Sleeves for fall 2018 are pumped up. Look for varying shapes of volume in sleeves and shoulders; as well as separated or partly detached sleeves. Sleeves and shoulders are your way to make a statement this fall.

New York Fashion Week coat trends fall 2018: the redefined trench

Classic trench coats are all well and good, but for fall 2018 look for the redefined trench coat. Coats are belted with exaggerated lines, shoulders, and sleeves. Look for a statement making trench coat this fall!

New York Fashion Week shoe trends fall 2018: metallic shoes

While metallic handbags and clothing have faded into the background for fall 2018, metallic shoes are staying strong. Look for silver shoes and metallic autumn colors on footwear.

Of course, there are way more then five trends from the New York Fashion Week runways for the fall/winter 2018/2019 season. These just happen to be the five most noticeable trends from the runways. The decades of influence were the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. In addition to these trends, look for more purple, plaid, ponchos, open toe shoes, pointy toe shoes, ankle boots, small satchels, handheld handbags, berets, hooded outerwear, fur trimmed hoods, athleisure, urban influences, soft prints, ankle length skirts, full length trousers and pants (no more cropped), beadwork, brown and orange worn together, blue and purple worn together, natural makeup looks, sleek hairstyles, peplum, and more!

Which trend or trends from the fall 2018 are you looking forward to wearing next season?
